BLUE COTTON TUNIS

Miniatures in blue cotton resin from the urban landscape of Tunis capital.

"HÔTEL DU LAC – 1973

Architect: Raffaele Contigiani.
As if facétieuses hands had laid it upside down. This huge silhouette of inverted, futuristic pyramid supposed to become an iconic hotel is now awaiting demolition. Our favorite building, empty, useless, charismatic and ghostly.
He inspired the siege of LucasFilm in Singapore and the "SandCrawler" Ship of the Jawa tribe in "Star Wars"

Hotel AFRICA  – 1971
Architects: Jason Kyriacopoulos and Olivier-Clément Cacoub.
The hotel dominates the city and borders the Bourguiba Avenue. As a totem, the proof of modernity, its azure blue facade confuses with the Tunis Sky. It's a landmark, a rendezvous point with friends. Because we can't miss it!

MEDINA – 698
We like to get lost in the winding streets. The novice traveller will be waiting for the minaret of the Zitouna mosque to be spotted. It is the curious Tunis, which is full of treasures for those who can look. Mandatory stop at "Dar Slah" for a Osben couscous, and we go back in search of new materials and extraordinary encounters.

SIDI MEHREZ MOSQUE – 1697
Under the Mouradites dynasty.
Only mosque in Tunisia built on the model of the large Ottoman mosques. Rare, it does not have a minaret! It is located in a place that we hold particularly, Bab Souika, headquarters of the football club: l’Esperance Sportive of Tunis, of which Flaÿou is a fervent supporter.

BAB SAADOUN – 1350
If you entered Tunis with goods in the XIVth century, it was mandatory to pay your taxes. Today, the sound of life has given way to the sound of horns. The roundabout of Bab Saadoun, creator of terrible traffic jams, condemns us to immobility, leaving us time to imagine the life that sat there, under the Arches, 600 years ago.

PALAIS des SPORTS – 1967
The "outsider" building of the city centre. Our most personal choice. Very strongly inspired by the small palace of sports in Rome, built in 1958 by Pier Luigi Nervi. A tribute to the father of Hella (co-founder of Flaÿou), former player of the national handball team.

TGM – 1872
Tunis Goulet Marsa.
The first railway line in Tunisia. Link between the city, the port, the history and the sea.  35 minutes of travel, 18 stops for so many landscapes. The TGM is a journey adventure for those who can appreciate the blue and white stations, the crossing of the lake, the Roman vestiges and the round and colorful back of Sidi Bou Said. A real enchantment, less than a dinar.

Taxis
The countless yellow taxis that roam the city. Red is free and green, it's busy. Exuberant, honking violently at the nano-second where the fire turns orange. Sources of crazy anecdotes, alternative guides to the history of Tunis, incredible characters with a thousand lives and ten thousand mood swings.
